Common questions we hear

What format does WhatsApp export look like?

A plain-text .txt file with one message per line, prefixed by a timestamp and sender. Date formats vary by region and OS — this analyzer auto-detects all the common variants.

How big a chat can it handle?

We’ve tested up to ~250,000 messages (years of an active group chat) on a normal laptop. The only real limit is your browser’s memory.

Will it pick up edited and deleted messages?

Yes. WhatsApp leaves “this message was edited” and “this message was deleted” markers in the export, and the tool counts them per participant.

Can I share the insights without sharing the chat?

Yes — and that’s the whole point of the Markdown report. It contains only aggregated metrics (counts, top words, top emojis), never raw message text.

Is my WhatsApp chat uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing, charts, exports, and every insight run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The .txt file you drop never leaves your device, which is why we can support unlimited file size — only your computer's memory is the limit.

How do I export a chat from WhatsApp?

On mobile: open the chat → tap the contact or group name at the top → scroll to Export Chat → choose Without Media to get a clean .txt file. On WhatsApp Web: settings can vary. On iPhone you can share the .txt directly to a cloud drive and download it on a desktop.

Which insights does this WhatsApp chat analyzer compute?

Does it work for group chats and 1-on-1 chats?

Yes — both formats parse the same way. For group chats you also get a per-participant ranking, which is the fastest way to answer 'who texts the most in this group?' or 'who hasn't said anything in a month?'.

How do the filters work?

Selecting participants restricts every chart and export to those people. The From / To dates clip the dataset by message date — useful for analysing a single trip, project, or relationship phase. The Reset Filters button returns you to the full chat in one click.

What does the Markdown insights report look like?

A clean, self-contained report you can paste into Notion, GitHub, or share with the chat group — including overview metrics, content meta, the participants table, top words, top emojis, and top shared domains. Great for end-of-year recaps or for friends who don't have time to open a web tool.

Will it parse chats in other languages?

Yes. Message parsing is language-agnostic. Word frequency stats apply a small English stop-word list, but participants, timestamps, emojis, domains, and all activity stats work correctly for chats in any language.

Why is this WhatsApp analyzer free and what's the catch?

It is genuinely free, with no catch. The page is funded by unobtrusive display ads. Your data is never sent to us — we couldn't read your chats even if we wanted to.
